Music Update!

Douglas Elementary School Tiger Choir
Tiger Choir News!

The Tiger Choir completed the winter portion of their schedule with three magnificent performances in December. We sang for two in-school performances on Friday, December 12 and also for our Winter Concert on December 16. We performed six pieces in all, including In Summer from the movie Frozen which was a huge hit! Tiger Choir rehearsals will continue on Tuesday, February 3 at 7:30am. Don't forget to arrive five minutes early so we can start on time!

3rd Grade Recorders

The third grade has begun their unit on recorders. We will be using the popular Recorder Karate method in which we will earn the nine belt colors, working our way to a rating of black belt. For each song we learn, a new "belt" will be given, which may be attached to the bell of your recorder.

If you missed the order, you are in luck! There are about 20 recorders left available to purchase for $5.00. This can be paid with cash or by a check payable to "Douglas Band Boosters".

Here are videos to help you with the first three songs:

White Belt - Hot Cross Buns
Yellow Belt - Gently Sleep
Orange Belt - Merrily We Roll Along

Good luck and have fun!
Mr. Rheaume

Physical Education Update!

Dear Families:

I would like to take this opportunity to describe the physical education program at  Douglas Elementary School. The physical education program seeks to contribute to the overall goals of our school and the goals of education. Your child’s intellectual, social, and emotional growth, as well as helping your child reach his/her potential in the areas of movement skills and total body fitness, are important components of this program. Physical education, to share meaningfully in education, will provide experiences that improve the ability to move, that engage thought processes, and contribute positively to the development and esteem in which students regard themselves and others.

The four areas of study in the physical education program include: educational games, educational gymnastics, educational dance (creative movement), and fitness. In each area of study, students will learn about what the body does while moving (Body Aspect), where the body moves (Space Aspect), how the body performs movement (Effort Aspect), and the relationships that occur in movement (Relational Aspect).

Over the past few months your child has been learning about body management skills, performing locomotor activities like jogging, sprinting, shuffling, leaping, jumping and dodging while changing directions and pathways, and participating in non-locomotor activities.  Dribbling, shooting and passing a basketball,  as well as  catching different size balls at the three levels of catching (high, medium and low) have also been worked on. In addition, fitness related skills like proper stretching, rope jumping using individual ropes and long jump ropes (3 person teams) have been explored. The highlight of these first couple of months, however, has been the opportunity to use the hiking/cross country trail that leads up to the high school (see pictures). While we wait for our fields to be ready for play, the trail gave us an awesome opportunity to experience a different form of exercise and to enjoy the mild weather and foliage. Lastly, we also took the opprortunity to use the high school soccer field to play some dodging and evading games. Needless to say we will be in "P.E heaven" when we finally have our fields available for use.
In proceeding lessons, educational dance (square dancing) and fitness related skills will be focused on.

In conclusion, the goal of the physical education program at  Douglas Elementary School is to provide experiences that improve the ability of the students to move skillfully, demonstrate versatile and efficient movements, gain and apply the knowledge that governs human movement, and become aware of the meaning, feelings, and joy of movement both as a performer and as an observer.

Sincerely,

Paul Smith

Dear Douglas Elementary and Primary School Families,

Thank you so much for participating in the Square 1 Art fundraiser!  Your generosity does not go unnoticed.
Not only has your order helped the Art Department at both schools, but it has also contributed to boosting the self-esteem of your children by allowing them to see their very own artwork printed on personalized keepsakes!  What a great way to cherish those childhood memories forever!
Thank you so very much for your educational support!
If you missed the deadline, no worries you can still order online! It's not too late to order! DES and DPS can still benefit from your order. Shop online at www.square1art.com/shop. You may also call Square 1 Art Customer Care at 888-332-3294 to order by phone. Your child's art access number is needed for both online and phone orders.

Introducing Grades 4 & 5 Visual Arts Printing Projects

Introducing the fabulous prints of the 4th and 5th grade artists here at DES!

We have spent several weeks preparing and printing our shape and line designs. Students have been introduced to the process of print making using multiple colored inks, brayers, stylus, styrofoam plates and a layering technique.

On Day 1 & 2: Students created a very simple yet unique line and shape design. We learned how to transfer our designs to a styrofoam plate using a tracing technique.

On Day 3: All students watched a demo and worked on their first print, black ink on white paper. We also talked about the drying rack and keeping our work space clean and dry.

On Day 4: Students created two additional prints. This time they chose their own color paper and ink. Students had the choice of light and dark papers, as well as white, red, yellow, blue, green and brown inks. We discussed color application and which would show and which wouldn't.

On Day 5 & 6: Students had the chance to experiment with the layering technique. They were asked to carefully cut out their three shapes and reprint on top of their initial print, but this time with a different color. At this point students were really able to play with color application and color placement. They loved the process and were amazed with their results. Great job Grade 4 and Grade 5!

Here are a few finished pieces from our 4th and 5th grade artists! The following artists are from Mrs. Auger and Mrs. Brozo's fifth grade class and Mrs. Woupio's 4th grade class. When we complete our prints, they will be on display outside the art and music room.

Wow... so AWESOME!!!

Nice Job!!

How Neat!!
